Citation Engineering
Citation Engineering is the content discipline that earns verbatim AI citations: answer capsules, fact-dense pages, original research, and digital PR placed on the high-authority surfaces large language models already trust.
What’s Included
- ▸Answer-capsule rewrites of priority pages
- ▸Fact density: a statistic every ~175 words, sourced
- ▸Original research & data studies built to be cited
- ▸Digital PR and authoritative third-party placements
- ▸Comparison tables and definition blocks engines lift
This service is one layer of our five-layer GEO method. New to the discipline? Start with what is GEO, or see how it’s priced on the pricing page.
How It Works
- 01
Rewrite for the answer surface
We re-engineer priority pages around how buyers ask: a 40–60 word answer capsule up top, then fact-dense support. Princeton's GEO research found adding statistics lifts citations ~41% and adding authoritative quotations ~28%, so we build both in deliberately.
- 02
Manufacture citable facts
Engines quote specifics. We commission original research and data studies that give models a number only you have, then package it as comparison tables and definition blocks LLMs lift verbatim. Notably, schema markup showed roughly 0% citation lift in Ahrefs' 2026 study, proof that earning citations is a content and authority job, not a markup trick.
- 03
Place it where models trust
Citations cluster on a relatively small set of high-authority surfaces. We run digital PR and earned placements on the third-party sites engines already cite, multiplying distribution, well-placed content reaches markedly more surfaces when you're cited across several independent sources than a single owned page does.
- 04
Keep it fresh
Freshness is a citation cliff: stale pages lose citation share to regularly-updated ones, since content is favoured when recently published or updated. We run an update cadence on every cited asset so you don't quietly drop out of answers.
Who It’s For
For B2B SaaS teams who already rank but still aren't the brand AI names, or who have no original research and authority signals for engines to quote. If your category questions are answered with a competitor's words, this is the work that flips that.
Citation Engineering, Frequently Asked Questions
What actually makes content get cited by AI?
Three things, in order: a clear answer capsule that directly answers the question, fact density the engine can quote (statistics and authoritative quotations lift citations ~41% and ~28% respectively in Princeton's research), and third-party authority signals. Our guide on answer capsules breaks down the on-page format.
Does schema markup help me get cited?
Barely, on its own. Ahrefs' 2026 analysis found schema markup correlated with roughly 0% citation lift, engines cite content and authority, not markup. We still deploy schema for entity clarity (that's Technical GEO), but Citation Engineering is where the citations are actually won.
Why does original research matter for GEO?
Engines reward sources that own a fact. An original data study gives models a statistic only you can be cited for, which then gets quoted across answers and picked up by other publishers, compounding reach markedly when you're cited across several independent sources versus a standard owned page. It's the single most defensible citation asset.
How long until citations start moving?
Technical fixes move first, but durable citation share from content and authority work typically takes two to four months, then compounds. Freshness matters throughout: stale pages shed citation share to maintained ones, since content is favoured when recently published or updated, so the work is ongoing, not one-and-done.
